Switch grass
- Panicum virgatum
- One of the many types of beach grass on the beaches and dunes of Presque Isle
- The roots of these clumps of grasses serve an important erosion control function, holding sand in place through wind and waves
- Leafy clumps persist through winter and are a yellow color, brightening a dull winter landscape
Carolina rose/pasture rose
- Rosa Carolina
- Pink flowered wild rose is very fragrant
- Grows in dry sandy soil
- Bright red rose hips persist on the plant through the winter and are good food for wildlife
Common milkweed
- Asclepias syriaca
- Produce a pod filled with abundant tufted seeds
- Have a milky-white, poisonous sap that gives the plant its name
- Monarch butterflies depend on this plant to lay their eggs and feed the larvae
Cardinal flower
- Lobelia cardinalis
- Inhabits stream banks and wet meadows
- Scarlet red flowers bloom in late summer and fall
